How far can I paddle?
Most guests explore the Shubenacadie Canal and Lake Charles. For safety reasons, we ask customers not to paddle beyond Rock Island on Lake Charles.

Wildwood Canoe Rules

1. ONLY TWO ADULTS PER CANOE. To ensure stability and safety, each canoe should carry no more than two adults.

2. AGE REQUIREMENTS. Children must be at least five years old to ride in Wildwood canoes. (Note: Children aged two and older are welcome in our kayaks when accompanied by an adult.)

3. SWIMMING ABILITY MATTERS. Children must be accompanied by adults who are confident swimmers.

4. WEAR A LIFE JACKET AT ALL TIMES. Everyone — regardless of age or swimming ability — must wear a properly fitted life jacket.

5. STAY SEATED AND BALANCED. Sudden movements can tip a canoe. Keep weight centred and stay seated while the canoe is in motion.

6. AVOID STANDING OR HORSEPLAY. Canoes can tip easily. No standing, rocking, or leaning over the sides.

7. KNOW THE WEATHER FORECAST. Always check the weather before heading out. Never canoe in strong winds, storms, or rapidly changing conditions. *Winds can change quickly on the lake!

8. STICK TO DESIGNATED AREAS. Stay within sight of the shore, and avoid venturing into deep water if you’re inexperienced. Non-swimmers should not paddle canoes beyond the Shubie Park beach area.

9. PAY ATTENTION. Listen carefully to our Wildwood staff — their guidance on how to hold and use your paddle is well worth it!

10. IF YOU TIP, DON’T PANIC. Blow your whistle if needed or swim to shore. We can retrieve the canoe. Your safety is our top priority.
